Soblet

My connection to the Huguenots starts in 1803 when Mensje Soublet, christened in Aalsmeer, Noord-Holland on 5 September 1778, marries with Arij Pijper, christened in Nieuwkoop, Zuid-Holland on 7 April 1782.  Mensje was one of six children born to Willem Soublet and Marijtje Holm.  Willem, as I was to discover, was named after his paternal grandfather Guillaume Soblet.

However, to find the birth registration of Willem's father Daniel was a little more difficult.  When Daniel married for the first time in 1741 in Aalsmeer he was said to be from Emmerich in Germany.  Since I was doing most of my research through the services of the Mormon Church, I decided to check the Family History Library catalogue to see if the parish registers of Emmerich had been microfilmed.  There were two towns of Emmerich listed, one had some entries, the other none.  I ordered a film from Emmerich but it was the wrong town, I needed the other one.  Unfortunately the films from the other Emmerich were not available.  I sent a letter to the Association of Evangelical Churchs in Nordrhein-Westfalen and received the address of the church in Emmerich.  At the same time I ordered a film from the Mormon church on Huguenot/French Protestant records in the Netherlands because I thought that maybe my forebear may have been French.   The Mormon church has microfilmed the wonderful collection of fiche cards that was housed in Leiden for several years but now resides in the Hague ('s-Gravenhage).  After the arrival of the microfilm containing surnames starting with S, I sent a letter to the Evangelical Church in Emmerich because some of the Soblet burials had taken place in the Evangelical cemetery.  I received a reply that they could not help me at present since they had no archivist.  They were planning on hiring one soon.  In the meantime the film arrived and I found a Guillaume Soblet in Emmerich with several children but no Daniel, all the children christened in the French Protestant church..  There were however large gaps between the births of the children.  I also noted that there were several generations beyond Guillaume.  Since I could not tie Daniel in, I did not go any further.

About a year later I received a letter from Emmerich telling me that the new archivist had information for me as long as I was willing to pay the fee.  When I received the information from the Evangelical church I was overjoyed because there was my Daniel, one of several children baptized not in the French Protestant church but in the Evangelical church.  This was the link I needed.  I was then able to go back to the fiche collection of Huguenots and search further back..  Most of the Huguenot ancestors came from Sedan in the Ardennes region of France.
